11 Minutes – Preparation and Practice Makes Perfect

According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes.

To prepare for those 11 minutes, NFL players typically practice 3-4 days per week, lift weights every day, and study film late into the night. Before the season even begins players participate in a training camp that runs from 7:30 am until 10 p.m. that includes both intense practice and detailed meetings.

All told, NFL players spend typically twice as much time in meeting rooms as they do on the field. In sports, like in business, preparation and practice transfer to results on the field.

Teams spend millions of dollars to determine which mental and physical exercises are the most valuable to athletes on a particular level of mastery before, during and after the season.
