Three Steps to Measure the Transfer of Training

Many believe that it is impossible (or just too difficult) to measure the transfer of training. Based upon over 600 training measurement projects, we know that nothing could be farther from the truth.

To measure the transfer of training, follow these three steps:

  1. Adoption: Your first step is to understand if your target audience is actually using the core skills taught in your program. This can be achieved by asking outcome and behavior-based questions of your participants 60-90 days after your workshop.

  2. High and Low Distinction: Once you have gathered adoption data, your next step is to identify the high and low adopters. This can be accomplished by splitting your target audience down the middle along a 100% scale for the 10-15 core skills targeted in your program.

  3. Impact: You can now isolate the results (typically in financial terms) produced by your learning solution by comparing high and low adopters of the predefined skills to see if adoption makes a difference. This also provides an opportunity to understand the impact of additional factors such as management involvement, performance coaching, and support tools.
The result is a clear picture of the difference made by new skills used back on the job.
